土家族信奉多种神，没有固定的宗教信仰。因神明大都与祖先有关，土家人认为“祖先”处处关照子孙，是最好的神，因此对祖先十分崇拜，故称祖先神。祖先神多数具有原始社会的风貌，只有少数才反映着阶级分化之后的现象。
